Fire has completely destroyed the terminal building at South Caicos airport around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. The wooden structure which withstood many major storms over several decades serves the island community of about 1000 residents.
The terminal served passengers traveling on daily domestic flights from Grand Turk and Providenciales.
There is no word on the cause of the fire but an investigation is likely to be launched to determine the origin.
South Caicos is poised to take off as a tourist destination following the opening of two resorts on the island, East Bay Resort and the Sail Rock Resort.
The numbers of visitors to the island are steadily increasing and the destruction of the terminal building will have an impact on travelers.
Construction of a new airport terminal building had commenced in the mid 2000s but this was abandoned after the funds ran out.
